Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy | Mendelssohn”s Third Symphony

“For this concert we are performing Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy with Eliza Nagle as our violin soloist and Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony.  Bruch never actually visited Scotland, although he did get as far north as Liverpool, but this does not stop his Scottish Fantasy being one of his best-loved pieces.  The Fantasy is concerto-like in scale, with each of its three movements based on a different Scottish folksong. The work will really show off the brilliant and precocious  talent of our young soloist, Eliza Nagle. Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony is called his Scottish Symphony as it grew, somewhat slowly, out of his visit to Scotland being finished some 13 years after the visit.  Mendelssohn was a child prodigy when it came to composing breaking all the rules, becoming more conventional the older he got.  This symphony mixes flashes of his childhood refusal to conform with his more conventional adult approach to music.  A truly beautiful symphony which deserves to be heard more often.”
